Please read these terms before relying on BuildMyMTB. Using the Site means you agree to them.
BuildMyMTB (the “Site”, “we”, “us”) is a free, early-stage tool for picking mountain-bike parts and checking whether they fit together, with a running price and weight. It is operated by Douglas Wills, operating as a sole proprietor. These Terms are an agreement between you and Douglas Wills.
The most important thing: BuildMyMTB gives you information to help you research a build — not a guarantee that parts will fit, work, or be safe. When the Site says “No conflicts found,” it means it found no conflict among the specific dimensions it checks — it is not a promise that the build is fully compatible or safe to ride. Always confirm with the manufacturers and a qualified bike mechanic before you buy or ride.
1. What BuildMyMTB is (and isn’t)
The Site is an informational prototype. Its compatibility checker compares parts across a set of technical dimensions (things like wheel size, axle standards, drivetrain speeds and systems, brake mounts, rotor and fork limits, and so on). Real-world compatibility can also depend on exact part variants, model-year revisions, firmware, frame tolerances, and other factors the Site does not model. A “compatible” result therefore means “no conflict among the checks we run,” not a guarantee of fit or safety.
2. Use at your own risk
You use BuildMyMTB, and make purchasing and riding decisions, at your own risk. Mountain biking and working on bikes carry inherent risks, including serious injury. We are not responsible for parts that don’t fit, don’t work together, or fail, or for any purchase, assembly, or riding decision you make based on the Site. When in doubt, consult the manufacturer’s documentation and a professional mechanic.
3. Catalog data: specs, prices and weights
Most of the catalog is sample data — approximate and unverified. The exceptions are parts that show a green “✓ Verified” badge, which have been checked against a manufacturer page or document with a source link. Even so:
- Specs and weights are provided for convenience and may be wrong, out of date, or rounded.
- Prices are sample or approximate figures (generally MSRP) shown for comparison. They are not offers to sell, and the actual price at any retailer may differ.
Don’t treat any number on the Site as final — verify it at the source before you spend money.
4. Accounts
You may create an optional account to save builds and track parts you own. You’re responsible for the accuracy of the email you sign in with and for activity under your account. Don’t use someone else’s account or try to access data that isn’t yours. See our Privacy Policy for what an account stores and how to delete it.
5. Forum and your content
If the community forum is available, you can post threads and replies. You keep ownership of what you post, and you grant us a non-exclusive license to store and display it on the Site so the forum works. By posting, you agree not to submit content that is illegal, infringing, abusive, spam, or that violates someone’s rights. Forum posts are public. We may remove content or restrict accounts that break these rules. The forum is for discussion only — it is not a marketplace, and buying or selling through it is not supported.
6. Affiliate links
Some retailer links on the Site are affiliate links, and we may earn a commission if you buy through them, at no extra cost to you. Crucially, affiliate links never influence the compatibility results or the order in which parts are shown — see the Affiliate Disclosure for the full, plain-language explanation.
7. Intellectual property and trademarks
The BuildMyMTB name, site design, and original content are ours. Component brand names, model names, and logos in the catalog belong to their respective owners and are used only to identify parts. BuildMyMTB is an independent project and is not affiliated with, sponsored by, or endorsed by any of those manufacturers.
8. Third-party sites
The Site links to external sites (retailers, manufacturers, GitHub, and others). We don’t control them and aren’t responsible for their content, products, or practices. Following an external link is at your own risk and subject to that site’s own terms.
9. No warranty
The Site is provided “as is” and “as available,” without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, or non-infringement. We don’t warrant that the Site will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that its data or verdicts are correct.
10. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent allowed by law, Douglas Wills will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages, or for any loss arising from your use of (or inability to use) the Site — including decisions about parts, purchases, assembly, or riding. Because the Site is free, our total liability for any claim is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us (which is normally nothing) or US $50.
11. Changes and availability
This is an evolving prototype. We may change, add, remove, or discontinue features — or the whole Site — at any time, and we may update these Terms. When we make material changes we’ll update the “last updated” date above; continuing to use the Site means you accept the updated Terms.
12. Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of Pennsylvania, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. Any dispute will be handled in the courts located there, unless applicable law gives you a non-waivable right to do otherwise.
